A man has been arrested for stealing a luxury car worth Dh 1.1 million from a parking lot in the Dubai Marina area. His two accomplices, both of Asian descent, remain at large.
The owner of the Lamborghini told the police that he had left his car at a private parking lot in Dubai Marina before he traveled out of the country but could no longer find it upon his return. After reporting his stolen vehicle to the police, he found out that the thieves had forged ownership documents to access his car.
The mastermind behind the theft, an Arab, was identified and arrested following the report. He admitted to the police that he had colluded with two Asian men to steal luxury vehicles parked inside towers in Dubai Marina for long periods of time. The cars they target are the ones whose owners have been absent for a while.
The suspect has been sentenced to three years in prison and a fine, with deportation from the state upon completion of his sentence. His two accomplices, who are still being searched by police, will also receive the same conviction from the Dubai Criminal Court.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time a luxury car has been stolen in the area. According to police, investigations are underway following several reports of luxury vehicle theft in various areas in the UAE.
Earlier this month, a gang was also sentenced to jail and fined after stealing a Dh 1.4-million Lamborghini sports car. The gang rented the Lamborghini for seven days and paid the amount of the vehicle's rent after submitting all the required documents. However, they did not return the vehicle after the expiry of the lease.
All five men behind the theft were later arrested by the police. One of the suspects admitted he disconnected the navigation device and connected it to an external battery. Another also admitted to changing the engine base numbers and replacing them with other vehicle number plates. The gang was about to transport the vehicle outside the country using forged documents at the time of their arrest.
