UAE-based leading technology holding group G42 announced plans to launch NANDA, a new Hindi Large Language Model, featuring 13 billion parameters trained on about 2.13 trillion tokens of language datasets, including Hindi.

The announcement was made during Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's visit to India.

The model is named after one of India's tallest peaks and was created through a partnership between Inception (a G42 company), Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence and Cerebras Systems. NANDA's launch will mark a major step forward for Artificial Intelligence in India.

NANDA has been trained using Condor Galaxy, one of the world's strongest AI supercomputers developed by G42 and Cerebras. It will give more than half a billion Hindi speakers the chance to benefit from the power of generative AI.

Manu Jain, CEO – G42 India, said, "India has solidified its position as a global technology leader, driven by transformative initiatives like Digital India and Startup India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership."

"As the country stands on the brink of AI-powered growth, G42 is proud to contribute to this journey with the launch of NANDA in support of India's AI ambitions," he added, according to WAM.

Andrew Jackson, Acting CEO of Inception, a G42 company, explained that the UAE-based leading technology holding group has a strong history of developing language and specialized large language models (LLMs).

"With NANDA, we are heralding a new era of AI inclusivity, ensuring that the rich heritage and depth of Hindi language is represented in the digital and AI landscape. NANDA exemplifies G42's unwavering commitment to excellence and fostering equitable AI," Jackson said.

Last year in August, G42 launched JAIS, the first open-source Arabic language model, which revolutionized Arabic Natural Language Processing (NLP). This gave over 400 million Arabic speakers access to generative AI tools in their native language.

JAIS, with models ranging from 590 million to 70 billion parameters, set a high standard for language AI, and G42 now aims to do the same for other languages that are still underrepresented.

G42 is introducing NANDA to support India's scientific, academic, and developer communities. The goal is to grow a strong Hindi language AI ecosystem and ensure that AI tools are widely available across the region.
