The UAE Ministry of Interior is hosting the GCC Strategy for Combating Drugs (2025-2028) workshop from Sept. 16-19 at Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi. The initiative aims to boost international cooperation and develop a unified approach to drug control within the GCC region.

The four-day event is a joint initiative between the GCC General Secretariat and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and is being attended by various key figures, including GCC Secretary-General Jasim Al-Badawi and Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior.

Judge Hatem Aly, Regional Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for the GCC, and Brigadier Mubarak Saeed Al Khaili, Head of the GCC Police Force. Representatives from anti-drug agencies in GCC countries, UN experts, and specialists also participated in the event.

"Our presence today reflects our joint commitment at the regional and international levels to address one of the biggest challenges facing our societies—the phenomenon of drug smuggling and its devastating effects," Al-Badawi said, according to WAM.

Al-Badawi emphasized that the workshop comes at an important time as GCC countries are working together against the growing drug threat, which harms individuals, families, and communities.

He described the workshop as a key step in boosting regional cooperation to combat drug smuggling, which mainly targets young people and threatens the well-being of society.

"Drugs are not just an individual problem but a societal crisis that requires all of us to stand united in our efforts and plans. The devastation of addiction is not borne solely by the addict but threatens families and the peace of society as a whole," he added.

Al Khaili highlighted that the UAE Ministry of Interior is committed to adopting the best security practices to combat this societal scourge, which poses a serious threat to security and disrupts societal stability.

He said that the UAE is actively working on drug prevention through innovative policies and initiatives, including using advanced technology, enforcing a coordinated approach, and applying proactive measures supported by law, all while following international agreements.

Last month, Ras Al Khaimah announced that the emirate is all set to get InSky Robotics' first GCC facility called VIM Solar Robotics in Al Hamra.
