DEWA's Green Hydrogen Project Cuts Over 40 Tonnes Of CO2 Emissions, Fuels 500 Cars
The Green Hydrogen project by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park has helped reduce over 40 tonnes of CO2 emissions since its launch in May 2021.
It supports sustainable mobility in Dubai by improving energy efficiency in transportation, according to a statement from DEWA. So far, the project has produced about 90 tonnes of green hydrogen, mostly used for generating green energy.
Over 2.5 tonnes have been supplied to the ENOC Group's Service Station of the Future (SSoF) at Expo City Dubai, enough to fuel 500 cars. The station can fuel about 50 fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in just eight minutes per car, WAM reported.
It is the only regional station offering green hydrogen, hydrocarbon fuels (like petrol and diesel), and electric vehicle charging. DEWA supplies the green hydrogen at this station, provided by its Green Hydrogen project.
This project is the first in the Middle East and North Africa to produce green hydrogen using solar energy. It has been designed to support future uses of hydrogen, including in air, land, and sea transport, as well as other industries.
The Green Hydrogen project — a collaboration between DEWA, Expo 2020 Dubai, and Siemens Energy — produces about 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. Its gas tank can store enough hydrogen for up to 12 hours, all created using solar energy.
The plant uses the hydrogen in a gas motor with a power capacity of around 300 kilowatts.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, explained that hydrogen is considered a key fuel for the future and a strong alternative to traditional energy sources. This is especially important as Dubai and the wider UAE work to build a green economy.
The Green Hydrogen project aligns with the National Hydrogen Strategy and the UAE's Net Zero 2050 plan. It also supports the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which promotes sustainable transport while improving sustainability, air quality, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
As per Al Tayer, DEWA encourages the use of electric and hybrid vehicles, which help cut carbon emissions in the transport sector and strengthen Dubai's role as a leader in the global green economy and sustainable development.
