RTA Awards AED 700 Million Al Khail Road Improvement Contract
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarded AED 700 million worth project for the improvement of Al Khail Road to ensure smooth traffic on the road.
Furthermore, the project will also consist of the improvement of roads in several locations including Al Khail Road, Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair and Jumeirah Village Circle - covering a total of 6,820 meters.
This project will increase the current capacity of intersections and bridges by around 19,600 vehicles per hour, cutting the travel time by 30%.
Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA Mattar Al Tayer explained that this project will enhance the road capacity and also impact the traffic flow on roads like Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.
"Al Khail Road is one of Dubai's key traffic corridors stretching from Business Bay crossing to its junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, encompassing six lanes in each direction," Al Tayer said, WAM reported.
He explained that the project's objective is to "enhance seven locations along Al Khail Road, starting with Zabeel, particularly between Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street intersections."
The director general further said, "This includes constructing a three-lane bridge spanning 700 meters to accommodate about 4,800 vehicles per hour, linking traffic from Zabeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Road directly onto Al Khail Road in the direction of Abu Dhabi."
Al Tayer noted that the second site is Meydan alongside Al Khail Road between Al Meydan Road and Ras Al Khor Road intersections, covering the construction of a two-lane bridge extending 610 meters to accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour. This road will link traffic from Al Meydan Road onto Al Khail Road in the direction of Deira.
"At the third site in Al Quoz 1 on Al Khail Road between the intersections of Al Meydan Road and Al Waha Street, the project entails the construction of a two-lane bridge stretching 650 meters, accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour to link the traffic from Al Meydan Road onto Al Khail Road in the direction of Abu Dhabi," he said.
Ghadeer Al Tair along Al Khail Road between the intersections of Al Meydan Road and Latifa bint Hamdan Street is the fourth site that consists of a two-lane bridge extending 640 meters with a capacity to accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour.
Jumeirah Village Circle along Al Khail Road between Hessa Street and Al Khamila Street is the fifth project that includes a two-lane bridge spanning 700 meters capable of accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour. Moreover, the project will also feature 900 meters of surface road upgrades to enhance traffic connectivity from the Jumeirah Village Circle to Al Khail Road in the direction of Deira.
The sixth project is surface widening works on Al Khail Road in Al Jaddaf while the seventh project involves surface widening of Al Khail Road at the entrance to Business Bay by adding an extra lane.
In February, the UAE also announced that the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Joby Aviation and Skyports Infrastructure will launch an aerial taxi service by 2026.
